Pinto with her Mister
Pinto with her Mister

I don't mean lose a pet to doggy/cat heaven due to illness or old age. I'm not a writer so I'm not sure if this will make sense because I write this hub out of grief for the loss of our loved Chihuahua Pinto.

We, my husband & I have made a habit of going to Las Vegas in November to celebrate our grand daughters birthday & mine. Due to the fact that there are few places that allow pets(those that do are dumps) we could never bring Pinto. Pinto is very loving but only to us & not sure of other people. Through the years she has learned to trust & stay with two other friends of ours which brings me to my story.

This past November we planned to meet with my son, daughter, son-in-law & grand daughter in Las Vegas. One of our friends said she would be glad to watch Pinto for us. So on the morning of November 10 we packed up Pintos food, bed, blanket, jacket, treats, vitamins & dropped her off at the dog sitters house. While in Las Vegas I text to check on Pinto & make sure she was doing alright. We had a great time but couldn't wait to get home & see our baby. We left Las Vegas mid day on Sunday November 21 driving the long 30 plus hours home to Panama City Beach, FL. I text the sitter on Monday to ask what time she got up to get ready for work so we could plan to pick up Pinto. I even thought about asking her to take Pinto home so she would be there when we arrived. Don't know why but I didn't, little did we know that our worse nightmare was about to begin.

Crossing into Florida on I10 that night was very foggy so the trip was slow & we arrived in town at 4:05 AM. Too early to stop & pick up Pinto so we went home to unpack the car & put things away. 5:45AM my husband leaves to gather up our bundle of joy, I decide to stay behind & wait, check e-mail, pay bills ... 6:35 AM I hear the door open i jump up excited to see Pinto & there stands my husband emptied handed. No Pinto beside him, I ask him "Where is she"? He replies "she is gone, she got away last night". I can not believe what I was hearing.

I can't tell you the pain I felt as I ran to get dress to go find her. My whole body was trembling, I felt sick to my stomach as the tears poured down my face. The next five days are a blur of looking, walking the streets calling her name, talking to any one I could find to ask if they had seen her. Trying to figure out how to make posters to put up, who to ask for help. Let me tell you there isn't much! I asked radio stations, TV stations & only one was kind enough to reply & tell me they couldn't do it. Why is that??

They have the time to talk about killings, robbery & etc. but no time to help a lost pet be reunited with it's owners. I was told you can place an ad in the paper, you can list on Cragslist, & check with petharbor. But what if they don't have a computer or get the news paper? Every one has a TV & most watch the news! There just isn't any real good way to get the news out that you have lost your pet. I put up posters & yet while walking the streets I came across two ladies putting up Christmas lights that hadn't seen the posters. What if your pet is no longer in the area you are putting posters up in?? How do you recover your pet??

If we could find a way to get the news out about our lost pets maybe more could find their way home. I have done the posters, placed all the free ads I could, paid $45.00 to run the ad in the paper for 16 issues with her picture, & offered a reward. When just offering a reward didn't bring her home I let it be known that I would pay CASH $500.00 no questions asked. I even inquired about renting a billboard, with no reply. I also paid $75.00 to a psychic in hopes that she could tell me which direction to look or if she was even alive. The out come of that a blank, but she did try to help me.

Right now as I write this to help ease my pain it has been 29 days & nothing. The grief I feel is eating me up, I can barely eat or think of anything else but finding her. I can not give up hope, even though I don't know where to look. I had little cards made, I will begin knocking on doors & taping the cards to the doors. Tomorrow is her birthday, she will be 5 yrs old.

Now my next concern is that some one was able to get her, since it has been very cold out & she is now hungry & thirsty. They decide what a cute dog & don't even bother to look for her owners. I can't even begin to tell you the pain that my husband & I feel. He does a better job of hiding it then I. Me, there hasn't been a day go by that I haven't cried for her. She was just so very special to us. Every night she would give me kisses good night, till my husband would say that's enough. No matter what time I came to bed or how late it was when I came home, she was there for me. Two years ago when I was told I had breast cancer she was there for me when I cried. When I went through the 7 weeks of radiation treatments, she was there to lay by my side when I came home tired. When my husband had knee surgery, she was there by his side. We can't find her & I feel as if I have let her down because I'm not there for her.

I don't want any one to go through the pain of having lost a pet. Losing a pet is worse than having it go to their special heaven, especially when you were not the one that lost the pet. You have no closure not knowing is she alive being taken care of by someone else or something worse. I try not to think of my last statement. I've been told that coyotes come into the neighbor hood. I pray one day we will have her back again, no other dog can take her place in our hearts.

I'm not either spoiled, I like going on walks.

Update February 23, 2011

As of today Pinto remains missing. I still search housing areas & watching the cars that go by looking for her, hoping to see her little face looking back at me.

It has now been 8 months since Pinto disappeared, & still she isn't home. I was told that someone found her dead in the road. That I don't believe because I traveled that road for weeks looking around the area for her. I want to believe that some one has her... Though, they haven't taken her to any vets in our area. Which makes me worry since her shots & heart worm check ups are way over due. I will continue to search for her .........

Oh, my dear, I am so very sorry for this. You are truly suffering for the loss of this baby. Your efforts are stellar and, hopefully, someone will see one of your posters or hear of this story and call and say "we have her." Oh, how I truly hope this happens for you. I know your pain; I love my animals so much and there are those very special relationships that are unique and real between us and our pets. I will say prayers for you and Pinto. I can tell you that I empathize with you completely as I lost my kitty, Squeaker, and went through all of it..so totally consuming that I missed work, hiked for miles and miles in search of her. When we love our dependent companion animals - for a short while or longer - the depth of pain and emptiness is almost unbearable. Much sympathy and HOPE for you, dear one.

I want to thank you all for reading my hub about my Pinto. There is still no sign of her ... Where do lost dogs go when you NEVER find them?? Panama City Beach, FL isn't that big. I even look at cars as they pass by me, hoping to see her little face.

Wow this is really sad about your little dog. I have heard that animals really make a difference when people are ill and it helps them get through their illness. I know they are great comfort for people because they sense that you are going through pain and probably feel helpless and want to give you love the only way they know how. I hope you find your doggie. Cheers.

We never really knew just how much she played a part in our lifes until know. Pinto was like the child my husband & never had together. It's really hard not knowing if she is alive or not. Thank you for your support. We continue to search for her still when weather permits.

My heart aches for you everytime I go across the bridge and see your home, everytime I ride past the street where she was staying and everytime I see a dog or see something that reminds me of you during the day. My prayers for Pinto and my prayers for you are always there.

Hi Mary, I just read your story. I was not sure about opening the site because I thought it may have been about losing a pet the other way, but then I read on. My boy Sammy is going on 14 and I know he does not have a whole lot of years left, but I just wanted to put in my comment about how powerful he is in my life also. This past year has put me pretty much over the edge and there were times I thought about not even being around, but I thought how selfish of me, I have my animals, sometimes (alot) of times I feel like I have no one else being here in Redding Ca. and my only life is work, sleep, eat (literally). But he is why I am still here and he never leaves my side, I know what they mean when they say follows you around like a little puppy dog. I really feel your pain, and where there is love there is always hope. Take care and may Pinto find his way back home :) Always Staicey.

What a heart wrenching hub. I am so sorry for your lost dog and you. I have never really lost a pet, but I had a dog named Sandy that was hit by a car. She was so beautiful. I was quite young, but still remember the sadness I felt. My hope for you is that someone special has her, and appreciates her loving nature. Prayers and hugs.

So sorry to hear about Pinto being missing. (We have 2 chihuahuas). Maybe someone found her and is caring for her.

Lit Lover, I hope so though we have had posters up every where since Nov 23. We even now have a very big electronic sign asking for her return. Nothing yet ... I'm beginning to lose faith that she is alive. I have now knocked on half of the neighbor hoods doors inquiring about her.

I am so sorry for you. I lost my pet Pomeranian in an unexpected way and I can't tell you how painful it was. I actually went on anti-depressants and was seriously depressed for 6 months. Nothing I've gone through was so painful. I will pray for you because I know how terrible it feels.

We had a kitten we raised. She was lovely. We had her for nearly 8 years. Then one day she disappeared. We were home, not on vacation, and Sparky had never wandered off before. We do think she may have encountered a predator down by the creek, but she was very familiar with the area and had been a good hunter herself. We still have no clue whatsoever to explain her vanishing, but it's been over a year. She'll never come through the pet door again.

It's very very sad to lose a pet. Time will help, but not all that much. I hope Pinto is safe somewhere and you never know, stranger things have happened.

I just can't believe how many people have responded to my article about our Pinto. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, your stories & prayers for us to find Pinto. I must admit as time goes on with out a trace or any one seeing her, I feel the worse may have happened to her. In spite of that I wait for the weather to be warm again so I can hit the streets looking. C'mon spring!

I lost my cat when I took him to the vet for some surgery and they lost him. I wrote my own hub about it: http://hubpages.com/hub/A-Trip-With-Thomas

He still has not shown up and I fear that he died of asphyxiation in the woods all alone.

I hope that your dog finds his way home soon. Yes it is heartbreaking not knowing how or where they are. Hugs.

I am so sorry for what happened and the anguish you are going through. Do you know about the service Find Toto? They will get the message out for you. http://www.findtoto.com/

Also, read the info at Missing Pet Partnership on recovery tips. There might be something you haven't tried, yet. http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recoverytips.

I hope you get a happy ending or at least closure of some sort. Love to you.

I used to work for a vet clinic, and it may help to contact the ones in that area to maybe put up a photo of your pet on the bulletin boards of the local clinics if possible. It would also alert them to your missing pet in case someone found her and dropped her off outside one of the clinics. Call animal control also.

Thank you so much for your concern & suggestions. We have 4 vet clinics here on the beach & I have contacted them with info & microchip number. I don't understand why the radio & TV stations can't make time to announce lost pets, even for a fee. I try to keep a positive out look of one day finding her, ppraying & crying .....

Maria M 12 months ago

I am crying as I read your story. It is a mirror image to our story. Our little Princess went missing on Christmas morning. I will never look at Christmas the same again. We went out in 5 cars canvassing the neighborhood. Flagging down cars and handing them color posters we made up in a hurry. I contacted a psychic too - to be told she was alive and not too far. We put posters in every mailbox in the area. We gave one to the postal carrier, paid $140 to wefindpets.net. Posters in every vet, bar - every place we could find thaqt would let us put one up. Like I said - mirror image???
